It's been over two years since Super Mario Odyssey was released, but to this date Super Mario Odyssey is still my most favourite game on the Nintendo Switch. This game has brought so much gaming joy for me, and there were simply so many great memories from playing it.

This post is obviously heavy on spoilers, so if you haven't played Super Mario Odyssey yet, you may or may not want to read this article.

Here are the top 10 memorable moments in Super Mario Odyssey:

10. The First Capture

First Frog Capture in Super Mario Odyssey

Although it's obvious that capturing anything and everything with Cappy is a major theme of Super Mario Odyssey. Capturing that frog for the first time to make the crazy high jump, it felt like it was the first chapter, and set the tone to many new and exciting Mario experiences to come.

Being an amphibian, a real "toad" is cool too, right?

9. Creating a Goomba Tower

Goombas are just the most basic of Mario enemies, Goomba stacks aren't even new to the Mario series, I'm not sure why but being able to create your own stack of Goombas is just oddly satisfying.

8. Taking flight as a Bullet Bill / Banzai Bill

Bullet Bills and Banzai Bills are a thrill to take over and fly through the air to take you over large gaps, along with blasting into walls and enemies. You really feel like you're playing with Super Power when you are a Banzai Bill!

Just be careful as there is only a certain amount of time before you explode...

7. Capturing a T-Rex

T-Rex in Super Mario Odyssey

This wasn't exactly a secret as the T-Rex was shown in the E3 trailer for Super Mario Odyssey. The first time you capture a T-Rex is actually quite early in the game in Cascade Kingdom. Capturing and controlling one of the largest known dinosaurs is one heck of a thrill, being able to destroy almost anything in your path.

It is a bit of an oddity to see a realistic creature inside of a Mario game though.

6. Koopa Freerunning Races

A throwback to the Koopa the Quick races in Super Mario 64, this time in each kingdom you will be challenged by a team of Koopa Troopas called the Roving Racers. What's better is that the race typically will take place under different conditions, i.e. night time in Metro Kingdom, during a snowstorm in the Snow Kingdom.

Koopas are one of the most awesome characters and it was great to see them have this role in Odyssey.

5. Darker Side of the Moon

Darker Side in Super Mario Odyssey

In recent years, many Mario have included a difficult final stage, where you are put to the ultimate challenge. When you arrive you will see all the friendly NPCs that you've met, and everyone is there to cheer you on! The Darker Side of the Moon is one of the hardest moons to get in the game, and it requires numerous captures and excellent platforming skills to succeed. It's like a final exam that covers everything that you've learned. It felt sad when Cappy is saying goodbye to you (to the player) as you climb to the top of the New Donk City Hall replica on the moon, and it might make you want to cry.

4. Capturing Yoshi

Being able to take control of Mario's long time friend was a pretty neat experience, now that you are able to partake in the "postgame" of Super Mario Odyssey, it gave a sense of how it might be like if Yoshi had his own 3D adventure. Yoshi has his signature flutter jump, his long tongue to eat apples and enemies, and he also has a new ability to "stick" onto walls.

Of course, the first time you encounter Yoshi is on top of the roof at Peach's castle, just like where he was in Super Mario 64 after collecting 120 stars.

3. Arriving at the Mushroom Kingdom

Who would've imagined that after "beating" the game that you'd be dropped right in front of Princess Peach's castle just like in Super Mario 64? It feels like you are coming back for a celebration since Toads and NPCs are there to welcome you. It's possible to have witnessed this scene earlier if you used a warp painting and arrived at Yoshi's house, where you can see the castle from a distance. There's even a Mario costume in his 64-bit form and a throwback to the courtyard where the Boos used to be!

The "Eternal Star" water fountain has a hidden star as well, just to play with you as this was the main source of all those Luigi in Super Mario 64 rumours.

2. New Donk City Festival

New Donk City Festival in Super Mario Odyssey

Wow! Words are difficult to describe how it felt to play the New Donk City Festival for the first time. Being in Metro Kingdom and New Donk City, you had a feeling that there could be something Donkey Kong related, and there were plenty of DK references. But it was a complete surprise to be dropped right into a party with the "Jump up, Super Star" song performed by Pauline in the background, into a nostalgic 2D Donkey Kong game, with the rolling barrels and oil cans? Holy smokes.

You couldn't have expected this to be coming, and it was an amazing gaming moment to experience. If not for what is coming in at #1, the festival probably would've been at the top of this list.

1. Capturing Bowser

Bowser Escape in Super Mario Odyssey

The first time you capture and control Bowser, Mario's longtime archnemesis, was one of those "OMG" gaming moments. Once Cappy pops onto Bowser's head, the sequence goes through all the memorable battles Mario and Bowser have had over three decades of video games and you are now in control of the biggest boss of them all.

It was a surreal moment that I couldn't believe actually happened - it felt one of the biggest video gaming surprises in years. The moon cavern escape scene where captured Bowser carries Peach on his shoulder is downright epic, and for good measure there was even a 2D Super Mario Bros.-style section!

This game had plenty of memorable moments, capturing Bowser at the end of the main story was the #1 moment in Super Mario Odyssey.
