Super Mario Maker 2 Direct Summary + Reaction
Nintendo will be presenting a special Direct on Super Mario Maker 2 for the Nintendo Switch today on 5.15.2019 at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET.
The first part of the Direct goes through the very basics of Super Mario Maker - appears to be geared towards people that have not played the original on the Wii U.
You can create custom Mario stages and share them online - yes, that's the whole point!
Some new features that were highlighted:
- Sun from SMB3
- Snake blocks
- on/off switch
- swinging claws
- adjustable water levels - as opposed to an entire level underwater
- custom scroll courses - this is something that can allow autoscrolling in more exciting ways
- vertical sub-areas
- ability to restrict the scrolling to make secret rooms
Banzai Bill makes an appearance, and other items like the Dry Bones shell, and Big Coins that let you have a larger quantities for to challenge players.
Besides just an end goal, it's now possible to set clear stage conditions, such as killing a certain number of enemies and collecting of a number of coins.
Red Yoshis that breathe fire - this is lit! Just like in the original Super Mario World.
The new co-op mode will be a great enhancement considering the original was a solo game.
There is also an addition of a new story mode - which features over 100 courses created by Nintendo, to inspire your own designs.
There are new background themes as well: desert, snow, forest and sky. Another interest addition - there will also be the ability to switch to a "night" theme where the stages are in a different environment with new surprises.
As shown on earlier presentations, there is a new Super Mario 3D World game style added to Super Mario Maker 2. Of course, it's in a 2D form, but you will get to use the typical items such as the warp box and clear pipes. There are many elements, objects and enemies that will be specific to this theme.
Overall, there is no doubt Super Mario Maker 2 is largely an incremental improvement to the original Super Mario Maker on the Wii U - the basic formula remains largely unchanged. Considering the Nintendo Switch is far more popular, we can expect the community to grow significantly.
Super Mario Maker 2 will be released on June 28, 2019.
