Nintendo Direct 3.8.2018 Mario-related details
In today's Nintendo Direct presentation there were quite a few interesting Mario-related announcements for both the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Switch. Surprisingly, the 3DS is not dead as there are still going to be releases going into 2019.
To start off for the Nintendo 3DS:
WarioWare Gold is coming out on August 3, 2018.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey - a remake of the title from the Nintendo DS with a behind the scenes story featuring Bowser Jr. will be coming out in 2019.
Luigi's Mansion from the GameCube will also be ported to the 3DS, the sequel Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon had been released on the 3DS in 2013. The remake will have new features including a boss rush mode.
On the Nintendo Switch side:
More footage was shown from Mario Tennis Aces which will be released on June 22, 2018. The game will feature events and an online tournament mode, along with a matchmaking system based on your record. In addition it will have a "swing mode" for casual play where the Joy-con can be flicked like Wii Sports Tennis.
A continuing trend, there will be a port of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker from the Wii U to the Switch and 3DS released on July 13, 2018. There will be new levels based on Super Mario Odyssey including New Donk City. The Switch version will have a co-op mode where one player controls Toad and the other can assist by throwing turnips. The 3DS version will have touch screen controls - probably migrated from the Wii U edition which uses the Wii U gamepad.
Could a Super Mario 3D World port be next as the games have a similar engine?
And finally, Super Smash Bros. is also coming to the Switch as hinted in a teaser video. The Splatoon Inklings will also be in the game. Details are scarce right now but the video does say it is an "original game" in the corner, so perhaps this version of Smash is not a port. Also it is developed by Nintendo and HAL, whereas the Wii U/3DS game was developed by Bandai/Namco. Release date will be sometime in 2018.
