Luigi, Yoshi, Smash, NSMBU - Nintendo Direct Sept 13 Summary
There were quite a few notable announcements in today's Nintendo Direct for 9.13.2018. Here is a summary of the Mario-related headlines and major Nintendo Switch announcements.
Leading off was a brief teaser trailer for Luigi's Mansion 3 on the Nintendo Switch, a game that will be coming out in 2019. Luigi enters a house with a bunch of eaten pizza boxes, and a Mario suitcase lying on the floor, perhaps Mario was captured again by King Boo?
Next up, were two Nintendo 3DS announcements on everyone's beloved enhanced ports.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey (this is one big bowl of alphabet soup) will be released on January 11, 2019.
The port of the original Luigi's Mansion will be out next month on October 12, 2018. The 3DS version of Luigi's Mansion will feature amiibo support, along with a co-op mode. The co-op mode will allow two players in the adventure, and one of them will be a "greener" Luigi - sort of looking like Shadow Mario from Super Mario Sunshine. Download play will also be supported for two 3DS systems and only one copy of the game, but it will only work for boss battles.
Now onto the Nintendo Switch side, there will be some new playable characters coming to Mario Tennis Aces including Birdo, Shy Guy, Koopa Paratroopa and everyone's favourite Petey Piranha! There will also be a new online mode called the co-op challenge that unlock outfits and different colour schemes. This free update will be coming on September 19, after the launch of the new Switch online service.
For those that missed out on the Wii U, there is yet another port, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, which features the original game plus all the levels from New Super Luigi U as well. Nabbit and Toadette join the playable cast as "easier" characters. Nabbit doesn't take damage from enemies - in other words, invincible.
Toadette can transform into "Peachette" which features a double jump, can float slowly in the air, and also will get a boost if falling into a pit. These two characters are definitely overpowered, but will be good for novices that don't have great platforming skills. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe will be released on January 11, 2019.
The name of the next Yoshi title is Yoshi's Crafted World, and it will be coming out in Spring 2019. As shown at E3 in 2017, the game is in a paper and cardboard-like world, and plays quite like Yoshi's Woolly World on the Wii U, except with eggs back instead of yarn balls.
A rhythm based mode called the Sound Stage was revealed for Super Mario Party, there will be a new single player mode, an online mini-game mode, and there are a total 80 mini-games, and they are all brand new. Super Mario Party is scheduled for release on October 5.
Additional details were revealed for the Nintendo Switch Online service that will launch next week on September 18. Notably, the service will feature a cloud save option, that has been long requested by fans, and at launch there will be 20 NES games available including Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario Bros. 3. Voice chat through the app will also be added to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Tennis Aces.
NES-style controllers will also be released for the Switch, and these appear to be able to be docked to the console for charging, like how Joy-cons are connected.
And finally for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, another new character, Isabelle from Animal Crossing will be joining the battle. There will also be a special hardware bundle called the Ultimate Set featuring a Smash-themed dock and Joy-cons. This bundle will be released on November 2, a month before the game itself on December 7, however a download code is included.
