Best Buy Canada "Curbside Pickup" Experience Review

Due to COVID-19 lockdowns in Toronto and Ontario, many retailers are prohibited from providing in-store shopping, and are being limited to curbside pickup.

Best Buy is one of those stores that offer curbside pickup when you order from bestbuy.ca. The "contactless" curbside pickup option at a store is free.

It can be advantageous to use curbside pickup as the items are usually available the same day, compared to regular shipping options. Best Buy normally requires $35 or more to get free shipping, using curbside pickup allows you to avoid paying the shipping costs for cheaper items.

Best Buy has had in-store pick up for a while, so this isn't completely new. Essentially, the store will pull an item off the shelves and reserve it for you. It usually takes around 1-2 hours when the store is open, and an e-mail will be sent to you when it is ready.

The item will be held for you for up to 3 days, and you will not be charged unless you actually show up to the store to pick it up. If you are unable to pick up an item promptly, there's no risk or hassle whatsoever, the order will just get cancelled.

Curbside pickup works similar to the in-store pickup, except you do not need to go inside the store to pick up your item. When you arrive at the store, you park your car at one of the designated parking spots - they are numbered much like how they are at a McDonald's for getting your orders delivered to your car.

Once you park in the spot, you can send a text to the phone number on the sign, or click a link in your order confirmation email saying you arrived.

You'll be asked to provide your order number, the spot you parked at, and provide a description of your car. They will text back telling you that your order is on the way, and that you can pop open your trunk, so that a staff member will load your item into your car.

You are also asked to provide two pieces of ID (i.e. photo ID and a credit card) and place it on your window so the staff member can visually confirm. If everything goes smoothly, it will be actually contactless, you can stay in the comforts of your own car. The staff member will load your item into your trunk and off you go.

Alternatively, if you do not have a car (or did not drive to the store), you can also line up at the front of the store and get handed your order in person.

Overall, I found the experience to be quite smooth with Best Buy, the signage was quite clear about what you have to do, and my items were promptly brought to me without a long wait. It was about as straightforward as how a McDonald's order pickup would go, the only difference is that you have to present ID.

It was a convenient and satisfying experience, and I would definitely consider shopping at Best Buy again and using the curbside pickup option.
