A few months back, we showed you a neat advertisement running in European magazines showcasing half a dozen brightly colored Nintendo 64 consoles. At the time, there were plans to release the yummy looking consoles and controllers in Europe by Christmas 1999 with no word on what if anything would be done for the U.S. market. Nintendo has now let it be known that it will be offering all six colored consoles plus one controller beginning February 21. The best part is, for those millions and millions of gamers out there who still want N64s, the new translucent candy colored units are will be available for the going rate of $99.99.
Presenting Grape, Fire, Watermelon, Smoke, Jungle Green and Ice
While it's basically still the same old console and controller bundle that cost $250+ three years ago, consumers are getting some mighty fancy names this time around at a much better price. The new console series will go by the names Ice, Smoke, Grape, Fire, Watermelon and Jungle Green. While you may recognize the Jungle Green moniker from the recent Donkey Kong 64 mania, figuring out which color goes with which console name can be a bit of a chore. To help you figure out which one you want to start drooling over, take a peak at the original European advertisement and please disregard the foreign gibberish text at the bottom.
IGN64 will have more on these new colored consoles including an investigation into whether or not they'll make you a better player as soon as we have more information. By the way, we already have one of the clear black ones, and it kicks ass.
