Starting today, the Wii Shop Channel has its first Wii game demo made available by Nintendo for free download. The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy for Wii was added this morning, all Wii users around the world can go online for a free trial of this title.

This demo of Super Mario Galaxy is based on the latest version of the game displayed at the Game Developers Conference in March. The overworld along with the complete first stage of the game is available for play. Super Mario Galaxy requires a Wii Remote and Nunchuk to play, and the playable demo is a single-player game.

"We're looking forward to providing gamers with the latest games to try out before they decide to buy." says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "The online capabilities of the Wii gives us endless opportunities to better communicate with gamers, as we've already seen with the numerous Wii channels."

In order to download the demo to the Wii's internal flash memory, 1600 memory blocks are required (approximately 200 megabytes). If the Wii does not have enough space, an additional SD card is necessary.

Before the demo will show up on the Wii Shop Channel, a special Wii Points card number (0000200700040001) must be first entered, and afterwards the demo will appear in the Virtual Console menu, where it can be downloaded.

Additional game demos for the Wii, along with the Nintendo DS will be announced in the upcoming months. Super Mario Galaxy will be released later in 2007, a specific release date is to be announced.
